Venoms 4th Birthday at Zest nightclub, Ipswich

Venoms 4th Birthday at Zest nightclub, Ipswich
Friday 25th March 205

Well, after harassing my boyfriend to leave early and head to Zest, I was thoroughly embarrassed to arrive and find the club hadn’t even opened yet!!

We only had to wait around for 10 minutes before the doors opened at about 9.40pm but I guess I’m just too eager and anyone who’s been to a Venom before will know why! This event has earned such a good reputation and nobody I know has ever given it a bad review, which means it has a lot to live up to! But this time was no different and I wasn’t disappointed!

For anyone who’s not been before, the venue for this event is really plush! It’s pretty much a typical nightclub but it had a re-furb a couple of years ago and the place is really nice.

I like the layout of the stage and its good that you can walk round the outside of the dance floor and there’s even a Jacuzzi, if you’re into that sort of thing!

So, we arrived nice and early to hear DJ Jocky kicking off the night alongside the venom residents EQ & Marty and Planetdnb superstar Mc Petite. They were doing a good job, warming the place up as people started to fill the dance floor.

Jocky’s a good DJ, he played a bit of everything and seemed to be pleasing the crowd.

I personally think EQ & Marty are really talented and they always smack it up, plus they’re pretty familiar in Ipswich so everyone was happy. And anyone who knows me will know how much I rate Mc Petite, he’s one of my favourite MC’s (not just cause I’m biased!) so I was merrily singing along to his lyrics!

At about 10 o’clock, DJ Shuffle stepped up and EQ, Marty and Petite stayed on for his set. I thought Shuffle played a wicked set, I was well impressed. He played a few tunes that I really love so I moved onto the dance floor to get my groove on! The place was filling up pretty early, everyone seemed to be up for it and there generally seemed to be a good atmosphere!

After Shuffles set was Simon Bassline Smith with the No 1 MC Eksman. Eksman was the best mc of the night.

I’ve heard so many people raving about Eksman lately and you could tell how popular he is from the crowds’ reaction. This was a well heavy set, Bassline Smith played plenty of jump up tunes and the place was starting to get hot!

Playing the midnight set was DJ Clipz who played a heavy intro and some well sick tunes.

Eksman stayed on for a bit of this set and was joined by Fatman and Kasha! These three were smakin it up while they were on B2B but Fatman did just as good a job on his own, he’s a wicked MC.

Anyway, next up was supposed to be Jack Frost but he appeared to be running a bit late so DJ Unix covered his set for about the first 20 minutes or so, until he arrived. MC’ing for Frost was Bassman.

Sorry if you’re a fan but I didn’t really rate Bassman on this particular set.
It might have been that he just wasn’t feeling the music.

Either way, he didn’t really say a lot! Although, I do remember one amusing remark about chopping some birds legs, something like ‘to the girl with the big legs, I’ll chop you down to size’ very funny! As for Jack Frost, he played quite a good set but I’m ashamed to say I was a bit worse for wear by this point and not much of it sticks in my mind!

Stepping up next was the Planetdnb No1 DJ, Mr Unix. This man is an absolute legend, he got all the ravers back on the dancefloor the minute he dropped his first mix and his tune selection was the best of the night.

He played some really grimey tunes and everyone was having it! Chatting on the mic for him was Mc Det, who was pretty average and to be honest I think he was struggling to keep up! Although he’s well known for his booming deep voice, I didn’t think he was that loud and he didn’t go anywhere near the crowd for most of his set.

I don’t know what happened to the atmosphere in the place but it seemed to get a bit moody around 1am, I witnessed a pretty big tear up by the stairs and decided maybe it wasn’t a good time to go to the toilet!! I must say, I’ve never seen any trouble at any of the Venoms I’ve been to in the past so this came as a bit of a surprise! However, from the way the security was dealing with troublemakers, I could see why this wasn’t prevented.

Another thing that has been commented on is how quickly the draft beer ran out and although I wasn’t drinking beer myself, I could see how this would have been well expensive as it worked out £7 a pint!

Anyway, all these things aside, it was still a wicked and you don’t even need to ask if I’ll be attending the next one! I’ve heard that Venom is going to be held on the last Friday of every month from now on, so hopefully this events gonna be a regular night in your diary! If so, I’ll probably bump into ya there!

Until next time……

Peace, Mrs Planetdnb x
