Breakage; Signal 16th November. Timbuktu, Small St Bristol.

Breakage is one of D&B’s hottest properties right now. The South London lad’s take on D&B, which owes more to Jungle and Dub than the Techno or Hardcore influences that dominate the scene, has gained significant respect for his releases on Bass Bin, Reinforced and Scientific Wax.
Breakage’s music is deep, dominated by intricate drum cuts and edits set against some serious subs, and the set he blessed the masses who filled the dance-floor at Signal proved his progressive, journey building approach to individual tunes applies to his sets too. And what a journey it was; setting the tone early on with the magnificent BassBin hybrid So Mars before building a highly original set that dropped down early Ed Rush and Optical classics like Watermelon and Trace’s mighty 1997 Sonar, alongside some seriously fresh plates like Breakage’s own Forgot the Name.

Judging by the size and buzz of the crowd present, for an artist who isn’t that well known by the non-vinyl buying D&B public it’s clear Signal have managed to build a name for themselves that draws the crowds (and the ladies) as well as any big name DJ. Without the ubiquitous big-room, heavily rotated ‘A-list’ djs so many other nights settle for, Signal focuses on bringing the freshest up-and-comings to your ears alongside their superlative residents.
