Cut Loose at Pressure Point 3rd June 2006
Cut Loose looked promising, with Kenny Ken booked to play a jungle selection it was set to be a good night. Like various other nights in Brighton, Cut Loose have a no MC policy, which I think is cool as it gives the raver full listening pleasure, although maybe MCs would lure more people in? The night was to be held at Pressure Point, which I reckon is a good choice, it’s around the right size and the sound system is fit for some quality Old Skool. As well as Kenny Ken, Cut Loose residents Boz Boz, Animal, J Ruxpin and Elliot Ness were on the line-up, playing sets from old to new.
I arrived around 11.30 feeling pleasantly surprised to see manga style UV backdrops lighting up the venue. It made a change to be able see who was hot or not! I was impressed with VJing by Vj Spank, who’s style fitted well with the night. It felt good to stand next to some half decent speakers, Boz Boz was on the decks and the tunes were sounding good, a relief after some of the nights I’ve been to lately. The venue was still half empty so I was hoping it would fill out. Boz Boz played a diverse selection of tunes old and new including ‘Music Takes You’ Remix and ‘Night Flight’ By Andy C.
Animal was on next, taking it up a pace with ‘This Style’ Remix by Shy FX. I liked what I was hearing, and by the look on other people’s faces, so did they. Animal played a complete mishmash of tunes, not many DJs dare do this, but it went down well.
At 1am Kenny Ken stepped up. I knew I wouldn’t be disappointed when the set began with ‘Lets Go’ by Potential Bad Boy. I dunno about anyone else, but for me it makes the night when I see that the DJ is enjoying himself. It was good to see a big smile on Kenny’s face as he dropped each tune, even singing along to some if I saw right! His set included ‘Renegade Snares’, ‘P-Funk Era’, ‘Lighter’ and a whole load of other classics. This set was just what I needed to hear. The only bad thing I could say about it was when the limiters on the sound squashed the bass slightly, but that was a minor problem. I also wish I hadn’t had to wait so long at the bar, all I wanted to do was rave! Big up the Kenny Ken each and every!
Maybe a bit too eager to get behind the decks, J Ruxpin changed the style completely with 90s Old Skool, a rare treat…but half the crowd disappeared? All I can say is perhaps the contrast from Jungle to Old Skool Hardcore was a bit too much. The sad thing was that halfway through, he changed the vibe back to jungle. Having said this, the mixing and tune selection was still wicked. Tunes in the set included ‘Far Out’ and ‘Such a Feeling’.
Elliot Ness, the final DJ of the night took things deeper and darker with a 95-97 selection, it was all good. Before I knew it, the lights were on, and once again, it was time to go. To tell the truth I was a bit disappointed it was already over. I’m starting to feel that some nights in Brighton close too early, although most people had already left, but not us, we would have been happy to rave for a few more hours, and did attempt to get ourselves to an after party!
It was great to hear some quality Old Skool at Cut Loose. A top selection of tunes were played by each and every DJ. We need more Old Skool nights like this, but what is going on with everyone going home so early…Come on Brighton!?
