RADICAL BEATS LIVE DRUM AND BASS PART 1 AT ZEST NIGHTCLUB, IPSWICH ON FRIDAY
27TH. OCTOBER, 2006.

REVIEW BY DJ STEVO.

After much anticipation the night had arrived, Radical Beats Live with a mad
line up of talent on offer once again at Zest, Ipswich.

I got in there with MC's Dexy and Dizbelief at about 11pm and was greeted by
the awesome sounds of Epoc Live. I couldn't believe my eyes when I arrived,
never have I seen a band set up like this in Zest and the atmosphere was
electric. The guy with his top off was going mental on the drums and the
female vocalist was really raising the roof with her lyrics, the crowd were
loving this and I was very impressed with the numbers in there at this early
time.

I missed Jocky and Joe 90's back to back set before Epoc but I heard it was
a slamming first set of the night and I was told both Jock and Joe were on
top form and worked well together mixing up a series of current bangers.

As you know this was Radiacal Beats Live, the first of many and we had a
total of 6 live PA's tonight for our listening pleasure. Epoc really did
start proceedings off well and I also heard their CD which Leopardess
brought and I must say I am now a big fan of these talented pair.

Amongst the other PA's on the night was "The Planet Anthem" produced by
Creeper and featuring Planetdnb's very own Petite and MRD. I really enjoyed
hearing this tune for the first time live and I had a good view at the front
of the new stage area which I think is alot better. Petite and MRD were on
form as usual and I really enjoyed their chats to this tune. I also thought
Creepers production was very good and I do love the bassline drop on this
tune, it's well heavy.

Another PA I caught was MC Element performing "Precious Secrets", this too
was a wicked live performance. I really rate this guy and he smashed it in
my opinion. I really like the idea of all the live performances, it throws
a whole new spin on things and the crowd seemed to lap it up.

Yet another PA I witnessed was Envy and Levela performing "Raving Massive",
this was a wicked slice of Jump Up and Envy showed real skills on the mike,
I had never heard him before but this guy had real talent and definately
hyped the crowd which was growing larger and larger by the minute.

The last PA I need to mention was by Simon "Bassline" Smith featuring MC
Youngman and the track was called "Steal My Heart", another slamming tune.
Major props go out to Youngman who spent alot of time on the mike that night
and really did show some talent, also big up the production skills of Simon,
a true legend in the scene.

Simon "Bassline" Smith also played a wicked DJ set that started off with his
awesome Technique Recordings intro tune that always gets the crowd bubbling.
He also played many of his own productions made by himself and partners in
crime Drumsound. This was a great set and the headliner delivered the goods
ten times over.

MC Eksman was also in the building around this time and he really set the
crowd wild, he also did a live PA of "Drive By" at one point in the night
and this went down a treat. This guy isn't called the Number 1 MC for
nothing and he truly smashed up the dance and came out with all his famous
chats that everyone recognises and can sing along to.

I must also mention Radical Beats' very own Mr. Unix who played a stormer of
a set a little earlier in the evening. Faultless mixing, double drops a
plenty, teases and loads of dubs we hadn't heard before complimented by MRD
and Petite covering mike duties.

Special mention must go to the other MC's performing, Ipswich legend Banton
who was on fire as usual, Planetdnb's Jaycee, Score and Twister and local
boys Shadow and ELB. All these guys have great potential and did a great
job on the mike earlier in the night.

Well, the night was nearing an end, it was a very good turnout now, one of
our best and also the atmosphere was more electric than usual. Everyone
said this was one of the best events so far and hopefully a sign of things
to come.

Big up everyone who played in the Hardcore Room, I didnt stay in here much
as I was drawn to the DNB but major respect going out to Mixman, Happy
Chapz, Top Bunkz, Magic Motion, Doolittle, 2NZY, Bash, Bouncer, ELB, Lyrical
Groover and Dan E who kept this room busy all night.

The final set in the main room was supplied by Gusta B2B Subliminal who
brought the night to an end nicely. Plenty of brand new tunes combined with
a few of their own productions made this a heavy set and a great finale to
the rave. The crowd was still going for it and it really had turned out to
be a top night and like I said, I really liked the new stage area which
should be a regular thing in the future.

Big ups to Unix, Katie and Shotgun for laying on another mad event for
Ipswich Town. Respect to MC Dexy, Dizbelief, Pearso, Kate, Little Rusty,
all DJ's and MC's and anyone else who was there who knows me. Also props to
the Planetdnb dancers who did a great job as usual and anyone who helped
with promoting the event.

Next event is the Old Skool Jungle special with Jumping Jack frost and MC
Foxy on Friday 24th. November. Be there!

Peace, DJ STEVO.
