One of the tastiest producers in DnB in the last few years, Fresh has been dishing out nothing but solid-gold club bangers since he parted ways from his former Bad Company cohorts. His debut album 'Escape From Planet Monday' won him further acclaim from the wider dance music community, and he is amongst the most exciting DJs on the circuit. We caught up with him ahead of his set in the One Nation arena at NYE-NEC...
You first found fame as part of Bad Company. How did you guys all meet in the first place?
I was DJing on Scandal FM down in Kingston, where I met MC Moose. He introduced me to Mick Vegas who at the time was promoting DnB out in Japan. Another mate took one of my tracks to Clayton down at Renegade Hardware which was where I met Darren (D Bridge) and Jason (Maldini). Jason mixed 'Colours in Noise' for me for Hardware (I was still learning at the time), and we then collaborated on 'The Code'. The rest as they say is history.
You are playing at the massive NYE-NEC event, heading up a very tasty DnB line-up. What have been your most enjoyable NYs over the years?
Last year was brilliant, I was in Perth (Australia), and it was about 25 degrees, which is amazing after freezing your tits off back here. New Year’s always a great night, everybody's up for it, and I usually return home more sober than everyone else, which is rare.
Do you feel any different about playing in these big arenas compared to small intimate clubs?
I actually find it easier playing to big crowds than to small clubs, there are good things about both, but somehow in a small club, the eye contact can make it more difficult, and obviously you get a bigger rush playing to a bigger crowd.
What are your earliest memories from Slammin’ events? Did you used to attend them as a yout?
I sure did, but can’t remember much about that period in general, which sums it up pretty well. I also remember proudly watching my copy of 'In Effect' spin round with a Slammin' logo on it back in about ’93.
How have things been going for you since you joined the massive Coda Agency roster?
Very well, never been so busy DJing...now I just need to find some time to get back in the studio and make some killers! They're a very professional and intuative agency. Thanks to Lucinda and Tom for all their hard work.
How do you feel about the current state of drum ‘n’ bass music?
It’s never been more exciting, so many new producers, so many styles of music to choose from; commercially its more popular than it has been for years. I’m really looking forward to watching how it unfolds.
Where do you get inspiration from your tunes from?
Corn flakes.
What’s coming up for Fresh in 2007?
Back in the studio. I've been really busy over the last year and haven’t had time to focus on beats. I’ve been having my first focused studio time since 2003, and I’m really excited about it. I'll also be working with new talent like The Brookes Brothers, Agent Alvin, and our other artists like Baron and Future Prophecies.
And one for the techies – what gear do you use to make your phat beats in the studio?
Go get yourself a copy of Blue you won't regret it. I’m currently sequencing in Logic, but it changes all the time. I did my album in Nuendo, and I’m also working a lot in Pro-Tools. |
