Quickfire NYE-NEC Q&A with NICKY BLACKMARKET by Benz

We grabbed a quickfire chat with Nicky Blackmarket ahead of his set at Slammin' Vinyl's massive NYE-NEC in Birmingham on the 31st. We told him to get on with it and not to mince his words! Here's what happened...

End of the year already! How has 2006 been for Nicky Blackmarket?

2006 has been very eventful for me – both abroad and domestically. Very wicked! Highlights...too many to mention...Canada, Global Gathering, Innovation in the sun...Westfest as well....

One of the most notable successes in urban music this year has undoubtedly been the rise and rise of dubstep. How would you describe this music to someone who’s never heard it before? What’s good about it?

Dubstep is just another branch of the tree. It’s new, fresh and interesting...it’s a new form of dub music. That’s all you need to know!

Your shop BM-Soho is one of just a handful of remaining independent vinyl dance music stores in London. How have you managed to succeed where so many others have failed?

You just have tighten up and cut some corners, and learn to cut corners. You’ve got to keep alert at all times – no sitting back!

When did you first start hearing about the genre? Has it done well in your shop?

The dubstep thing has done very well and we’ve got DJ Youngsta in the store and he has really kept it flowing with that stuff...

You are playing at Slammin’s massive NYE-NEC event in Birmingham this New Year’s. Do these big arena shows still excite you as much as they used to? Or are you just as happy doing your thing in a small venue?

I love to play at those small places as well as the big places...they’re all important as each other.

How do you think the Slammin’ guys have managed to stay at the top of the game for so long?

The same way how we run it in the store really....very tight!

Who do you think is really going to break through in 2007 in DnB or otherwise? Who’s your tip for the top?

There’s going to be loads of people coming through in 2007...I don’t really want to start mentioning names as I could be here all day! Just watch this space...keep checking the store for hot tips...
What have you got to say to all the vinyl naysayers out there? Do you think it’s here to stay?

Vinyl is always going to be here. It’s not like an MP3 on a CD – it’s coming like razorblade bizness!

And finally, what’s the one track you can’t wait to drop on NYE?

My tune – “Klank” ha ha! I’ve been back in the studio again, going in with Phantasy...more to come next year!
