Who remembers Electrybe? For some of our younger readers the name may not mean anything but way back when the Hardcore and Jungle Scene was thriving Electrybe was at the forefront of the rave scene, promoting raves on a global scale. Electrybe was started by a guy called Otiz F. Angel and he has recently written a book telling his life story. It’s a fantastic read for anyone that’s ever been into the rave scene, you can read my review of the book here.
So after recently reading “Rave Story” by Otiz F. Angel I was delighted with the opportunity to disturb him from his duties in Hamburg LOVE for a quick chat!
Andy: How long did it take you to write the book?
Angel: Originally I thought it was going to be an easy task and if I kept my head down it would take me about 2 months... WRONG! It actually ended up taking just over a year, with lots of help from my son. After getting things down on paper everybody who read it thought it was off the hook and it inspired me to keep going with the story.
Andy: What problems did you come across when writing the book?
Angel: Remembering everything, and not in the sense of physically remembering. I remember everything well but writing the book brings it all back. It was a roller coaster ride re-living some of the bad times of my past. I ended up quite depressed while writing some parts of the book!
Andy: What advice would you give to wannabe authors?
Angel: Firstly, a large bottle of vodka (laughs), but seriously don't do it unless you have lots to write about and if your doing a bio of yourself then be prepared to bring up the past! Fiction I can’t really comment on but I’m sure its just as much stress!
Andy: Are you working on the sequel yet?
Angel: Since I finished the 1st book life since then has been the sequel. I'm about half way through physically writing the book now and as we speak I'm living the 3rd.
Andy: When do you think we might get to see the film?
Angel: The film is still in the pipeline, going by what the professionals say and not making any of my own guesses time estimates are within the next 2 to 3 years.
Andy: What projects are you working on at the moment?
Angel: At the moment I’m really concentrating on pushing the Jaava sound. Getting it heard wherever I can and evolving the sound and deconstructing the melody!
Andy: If you want to know more about the Jaava sound log onto the official Jaava website http://jaavamusiconline.com/
Andy: What advice would you give to event promoters?
Angel: As well as thinking about the money, think about the people. Always push for a good vibe, keep out the trouble makers, if you let the trouble makers in they will kill the vibe and work against the success of future events. Also watch out for the drugs, they can ruin any event.
Andy: What advice would you give to producers?
Angel: Do your best; don't let anyone tell you how to make your sound. Explore, be inventive and most of all be creative!
Andy: Who would win in a fight between Superman and Spiderman?
Angel: Hmmmmm.... It's got to be Superman. I'd like Spiderman to win but Superman would definitely have the edge!
Andy: Where is the next LOVE club going to be?
Angel: Unfortunately I can't really divulge that kind of information. LOVE has been full of trial and tribulation, your best to keep an eye on the LOVE website http://www.LOVEorganisation.com and of course wait for the next book which will fill in the blanks!
Andy: Does LOVE promote any DnB nights?
Angel: Once in a while! We work with a few London promoters, but generally don't do anything big. However if someone reckons they could pull a big crowd then we are up for listening!
Andy: What’s your opinion on the global dnb scene?
Angel: In short it's a Phoenix waiting to be re-born. It's found a niche market and it seems to have sat there waiting on the sideline. I'm sure Drum and Bass will rise once again to its full glory!
Andy: Have you ever produced dnb?
Angel: Years ago I was producing Jungle but I have done nothing with it for years, I would definitely be up for doing some in the future!
Andy: Have you got any final words?
Angel: Be the best you can be! Look after each other in club world!
