DORION QUEST – SOLID VINYL
Interview by Dhanu Le Noury
Quest is the guy behind the Solid Vinyl movement. Quest started in the music industry at a very young age. He was running his own pirate radio by the age of 13 back in 1990. Dorion describes his production style as freestyle with a pinch of crack cocaine “yep that's it freecrackstyle … lol” says Dorion. “If I wasn’t producing, I’d be working in parliament or running organized crime. I know, trust me, it’s the truth”. On classical music training, “I can play the spoons”.
PDNB: Who is involved in the Solid Vinyl label?
“Bloody hell, loads of people. Hmm well, there is me myself MR QUEST, you got F.D.C. aka THE FLYING DOC, my partner in crime MR VIPER, and our silent partner Sabbo. That’s the main players in the background. Now when it comes to our artists we got the godfather MC 5ive O, the Ragga Twins – Flinty Badman & Deman Rockers. Also there is Lady MC, Mr gaps, Lady Cee, TC IZLAM and Ed Solo. Oh yeah I cant forget Devious Dee & Desert Rat, our 2 newest members. That's about it from the dance music scene. From the ragga side, our JAMY-CANS, yeah JAMY-CANS = Jamaicans, there is my close friend and comrade BRAVEMAN. He is behind bars at the MO, naulty naulty, any way let’s move on to Ragga Ranks, she is amazing. Now when it comes to singing and chatting we have singjay Mr Fix It and singjay Pappa Mini.”
PDNB: Dorion, I haven’t got all day.
“I told you there was a lot, I have not finished yet. We have a whole heap of dee jays that work for the label these are DJ RIBZ, IAN DEE, DJ DESTINY, DJ FLAIR, DJ KASKADE, DJ HYDE, MR TOUCH (CYNDICUT FM) and I can’t forget THE P.O.P THE E.Y.E. I must add nice guy, Greg, my secret weapon. This guy is going to be huge, David Gray rest in peace when I bring this fella to the frontline.”
“Hold on I forgot you Vocalist Penny Black and Deemas Jay.”
PDNB: What are your goals for Solid Vinyl and the music industry?
My goal is to fck this sh$t up, flip it on its head, flip it back again, get world domination have fun and then go get a cup of tea.
And my message? Be your own boss and do not blow like a read in the wind. We all want to make a difference in our own way. We are all fighters and all want to help with the downfall of the Babylon system. There is an agenda and there is a plan, let me give you a taster as this is what Solid Vinyl is about – message and education the truth.
When it is a matter of telling the truth I hold fire as the truth can be a dangerous path to follow, it can kill and cause casualties but on the whole the truth save lives and makes earth a better place to be.
As I journey on my winding path I find that lies and falsities turn heaven into hell. I know this from the simple fact of religion, race and ism after ism.
Let’s put the truth to test, if the truth was told about individuals who are idolized and respected in the drum and bass scene, heads would surely roll. Many people would get defensive, some would get offensive and some just would not care (this would tell a story of its own).
This is the nature of the truth, with all the lies and propaganda that is part of our lives and has been for thousands of years, why put more bullsh$t on that mountain of crap.
When it comes down to it e.g. making tunes with incantations of rocking me or shaking your body, this does not address the issue of British and western people being shafted by the system, being made to look like mugs again and again. Imagine if you lived in the east you would think, look at all those pricks in the west still being fcked over by Babylon.
People in the east might not have much in the eyes of the west, but at least they’re not being robed by mugs with no bottle hiding behind red tape, laughing there tits off along the way. In the east the people in charge are open in the fact that they are the boss, and if you don't like the way they go on, then it’s the people who should change things.
I know and I hope others know when you come from street level, you are on the front line of oppression, when money is in the picture the truth does not mean much or have much value, taking this into account as British home grown music makes more than enough money, for the people involved. I hope also to expect certain individuals and outfits to represent the rights of human beings, no matter what race sex creed or colour. There is far too much corruption going down from impotent people with evil intentions. Who wants to be a part of the problem when you can be a part of the solution.
Well that is just part of what SOLID VINYL is about. I could be here all day. Let’s just say we have an agenda, read the book (coming soon) or come to our events for more info.
(PDNB: I think Dorion may have been flipped on his head when he was little, shhhhh).
“Well you asked, that’s just one way of answering the question. To be honest that’s a huge fcking question to ask a guy with a name like Quest, you get me.”
PDNB: Dorion what is your involvement with the HIPSTEP Movement? Tell our viewers a little bit about Hipstep.
“Hipstep yeah yeah, big up Mr Tee Cee, clever guy. My involvement is, I bring the music to the public and hold down the Hipstep thing in the UK. Me and TC are on the same page when it comes to music so it's kind of lucky we met. Hee hee, giggle giggle – remember “hip it iz step it up”. Reality, the real deal, no falsity, the truth. Sorry that's it. If you don't know, get to fcking know, grrrrrrrrrrr!”
PDNB: What do you feel have been the benefits and downfalls of owning and running your own label?
“To be honest “benefits”, there are fck all benefits so far. Well no that's wrong, that's me being negative sorry. Ask me that again in a year or 2. The downfalls of running a label is having to sort out slackness and being forced to get dark with people - “where is my fcking money!” You get me?”
PDNB: You have had some really great releases recently with WEEDA GUNJAH, Jerlipy Lipy, Shut Em Down and others that have been doing the rounds at the moment. What has the feedback been like so far and who is supporting the tracks?
Well the feedback has been bloody amazing, the support has been sh$t. Same old thing, it's about who you know and who knows you. I feel there is some serious politics going down in the DnB scene that needs to be addressed. Once again, we get back to the truth …
PDNB: What is the truth Dorion?
Well I’m not gonna nail myself to a cross, but I have supported and helped the DnB scene grow from the start and there is a lot of players in the scene who are just out for themselves. And should be helping others as well as Solid Vinyl more than they are, what goes around comes around, nuff said.
PDNB: You have recently been touring the Solid Vinyl Showcase. Which countries have you taken the showcase to, and which has been your favourite so far?
We love all our gigs. Up close and personal, that's what we like. If I had to say the best, personally it would be Miami, Hipstep Lounge party. I think it had something to do with the great looking women and palm trees, any one will tell ya, me and palm trees, it makes me feel at home.
PDNB: What attracts you to drum & bass that you do not feel in other types of dance music?
“Well I love all music and I make all sorts of music so this question is bullsh$t to me. COME ON MAN IM A MUSO.“
PDNB: You didn’t answer my question properly! COME ON (SHOUT)! “What do you LOVE about drum & bass”? It’s very different to other types of music, it’s like a force of its own. There must be something special you love about it.
I love all music, it’s all the same to me, but if I had to put it in a category I would have to say it’s all about the drums and the bassline. LOL!
PDNB: Who were your musical influences in your earlier life?
“It’s got to be Madness, the Rolling Stones, the Specials, the Sex Pistols. Most definitely the CLASH. K.L.F. fck me there is loads, Buddy Holy, dare I say it Elvis, Ottis Reading, Doughy Fresh and the Get Fresh Crew. Anything with soul, Cutty Ranks, the Ragga Twins, Buju Banton, The Who, Pink Floyd. You get the idea? I’ve checked and got into it all, even Madonna. I grew up with music playing day and night so I have really done it all going back to rock n roll.”
PDNB: Are you slating Madonna?
Yes, she used to be cool, but I think she has lost the plot nowadays.
PDNB: Do you have any gig horror stories?
“The closest horror story is when I dropped a tune by 2 Bad Mice back in 1992 (Don't You Want My Love). I was one of the first people to have the tune and it meant a lot back then. Anyway, I dropped the tune and the crowd were going mad waiting for the drop, the whole dance went mental as the tune dropped, my DJ friend also went a bit mental and smashed up one of the decks. The one that was playing the tune. But at the end of it all the crowed loved it and on went the show. I suppose you had to be there … yawn!”
PDNB: Which super hero do you think you would get on the most with, and why?
“It would have to be wonder women you get me, wink wink.”
PDNB: Who do you think would win in a fight then – Wonder Woman or Lara Croft?
Wonder Woman would beat Lara up, proper proper proper. I would like to see that though, yes yes.
PDNB: Is there anybody that you personally admire, in or outside of the music industry?
“I think Jesus was a pretty cool geezer. If it’s somebody who is around now then it would be Eminem, Slim Shady, Marshal Mathers. I got to give Tony Ben a boost.”
PDNB: Do you have any interests or pastimes outside the music scene?
“I like to walk my dog and get back to nature, while thinking about time and space and the theories of the universe. It’s all about the 11th dimension.”
PDNB: Tell us a bit about the 11th dimension then. What is it and what would one expect to find there?
“You could find all sorts of mad sht there, not just slightly different reality to our reality as Albert Einsteine thought, but a totally different lik. Fck me I can’t believe I just summed that up like that …”
PDNB: It’s Sunday afternoon and you are chilling out at home – what is on the stereo or TV?
“I am not really into the TV thang. I can be caught checking a vast range of tunes on my stereo. I do like my ragga and reggae though. I am feeling the Dizzy Rascal thing, also that dutty rock Sean Paul, and Cold Play, Parachutes and David Gray are still in the running. I still gotta rinse out a bit of the Streets. Bloody hell music is my life. I’m always checking all sorts. I was getting right into Otis Reading earlier on today.”
PDNB: What do you think of the new www.hipstepsistaz.com website?
“I think it is about time someone done someting to bring you women to the frontline, anything that brings you bitches together is a good thing.”
