    Epidemik @ Ministry of Sound - 16 March 2007

Image I had been looking forward to this event for some time now. I was very lucky enough to have been to the Ministry the 1st night it ever opened back in 92. But back then I was only a raver and not a DJ. The drive from Norwich took us a bout 3 and half hours. It usually takes us 2 hours but when you’re in a convoy it always take longer. 1st pit-stop for fags and rizla, 2nd stop for drinks and food and then 3rd stop for petrol…arrrrrr why didn’t they get petrol on the 1st stop? Cos they were already munted. We finally arrived around 11pm, found somewhere to park quite easily and snuggled into the queue. Didn’t have to wait too long to get in. Found the security very friendly and professional, this made a huge difference on our night.
The long tunnel that leads into the club made me feel like a footballer just about to walk onto the pitch. The doors opened and into the Bar Room we strolled. This room was very colourful and the décor was very easy on the eye. It made us feel very warm and fuzzy inside and had a nice welcoming factor about it. A good wide choice of all kinds of house music kept this room alive all night. Image
Image I heard acid house, very good electro music, old skool house, lots of late 80’s material that I thought I had forgotten, funky house and even some tribal stuff. Lots of old with new is always a good combination and this applied to all the clubbers in there too. It’s good to see 18year olds mixing with the 40/50year olds……makes the evening a very balanced one. The DJ set of the night for me has to go to Wayne Eldridge & Matt Handy, these guys had the clubbers eating out of the palm of their electro hands. Well done boys!!
The club was now filling up and I decided to go check out the VIP Room where they had very kindly laid-on some Drum & Bass and you didn’t have to be a VIP to get in, which was a touch. Alas the room could have done with being a big larger for all the D&B fans in there, but they didn’t seem to mind as they had the comfort pf the VIP facilities : private booths, leather sofa’s and the most beautiful LED light display you have ever seen. Now I know that D&B has got itself a bad reputation in the past for having attitude….well I can assure you that there was absolutely none what-so-ever at this event.  Image
Image All the clubbers were smiling at each other, grooving with strangers and genuinely having a ball. If someone knocked into you, they said “Sorry”, if a drink was spilt, a new one was bought. This is the way it should be, it was a pleasure to experience it.
Now to the main room for a bit of old skool hardcore. Walking along the balcony bought back memories of when the club never used to have one. It was always a bit of a squeeze before. I found it to be very useful because I could see/find all my mates that I had now lost in the crowd and was also a good viewing point to capture all the atmosphere from up above.  Image

There are 2 separate tunnels that lead into the main room. If you havnt been to this club before you may think that there is nothing down there because you can’t actually hear anything. The reason for this is because the club has a directional sound system. Basically, you can only hear the sound of the room once you have walked into its range. A very clever factor and a system that knocks spots off of many I have heard over the years. It makes all the difference having a good rig that is finely tuned and one that doesn’t leave a ringing in your ear for the next 2 days.Every DJ and act in this room put on a great performance and I just wish I could have split myself up into 4 pieces so that I could have seen and heard everyone, but alas this wasn’t possible.

Plenty of variety in the old skool genres, the only negative feedback (after the gig) for the whole event so far was in this room…too much breaks! And yes the promoter Grant has taken heed of this factor and will try to ensure that next time that you all get old skool. Being a breaks and old skool lover, I lapped it up, embracing every tune with open arms. The atmosphere in here was again very friendly and I found it very difficult to drag myself away. The word I saw was “fun”…..people were enjoying themselves and having lots and lots of fun. Can’t wait to experience that room again.   Image
Image Now to the Baby-Box room for Nu-Dawn’s debut appearance at the Ministry alongside The Vinyl Touch Crew. This room is very special indeed. The ceiling is covered in different sized mirror balls and has a leather bed in the middle of the dance floor. This room was heaving from start to finish with wall-to-wall break-beat heads. There were all kinds of break-beat thrown at us which we willingly absorbed. It was good to see this music being appreciated as I’m sure the Ministry doesn’t see too much of this style in their club. Set of the night has to go to DJ Twista. Had never had the pleasure of seeing him in action before, a very, very good DJ, was most impressed

The flyer quoted “They said it would never last & 20 years on the Rave Scene is still going strong! An old skool rave at an old skool price – run by the ravers for the ravers! See you at the front of the dance floor! – Be part of something truly special!” Well this rave certainly lived up to its word. If you were there you will definitely know what I mean…if you weren’t…then please do make the effort and come to the next one. I don’t know of any raves that are ever this cheap and the line-ups are always top-knotch. A DVD (c/o Triple X Promotions) has been made of this event, I have been lucky enough to have seen the opening footage…you have to get yourself a copy! A definite must-have for anyone’s collection. Looking forward to the next chapter that Epidemik has to offer……worth every penny.

Quote from Jay0Jay (DSI) the tunes was pumping the boys were jumping and the ladies were stunning the atmosphere was electric everyone was bang on it Raving till 6 n shit da rave was soo sik and now is ova all i can do is think..... Bring on the muthafukin next EpideMiK!!!!
